While Salmon’s hit brought his own boyhood to mind, I encountered another unexpected story about him and baseball’s rite of passage.

“It was a hit by Tim Salmon to keep the Angels in the 2002 World Series that they went on to win,” comedian and former late-night talk show host Arsenio Hall told me in 2012. “It was against the Giants. I remember taking my kid to see his first World Series game, and mostly because Barry Bonds is a friend, and I knew my days were numbered as to how long I could take my kid to see a legend play. So I remember it was a hit by Tim Salmon. It was big, but it was more than baseball to me. It was personal. It was a special moment that I got to see with my son. I never went to a baseball game with my dad, so it was a cool, cool day at the park.

“And Scott Spiezio, I remember his big hit in that series because I interviewed him for my late show. At that time, his hair had colors and stuff. We talked about a garage band he had. He was a good musician. I remember listening to music he had done with his garage band. I remember his hit, but I remember this Tim Salmon hit more, because I actually have the LA Times with a picture of him from that game. It was a big game, important game, but mostly because of personal stuff.”
